Akinwuntan Promoted Associate Professsor of Physical Therapy and Neurology

The Nigeria Physiotherapy Network (NPN) is extremely happy to learn that Dr. Abiodun Emmanuel Akinwuntan of the Medical College of Georgia (MCG), Augusta, Georgia, USA has been elevated to the position of Associate Professor effective July 1, 2010.

MCG's President's Institutional Committee (PIC) which approved the promotion alluded Professor Akinwuntan's success to his dedication, hard work and professionalism which has also contributed to making MCG an even greater institution since his joining in 2005. It is also noteworthy that Dr. Akinwuntan has joint appointments in MCG's School of Allied Health Sciences, School of Medicine (Department of Neurology) and the School of Graduate Studies. It is therefore a very big deal that Dr. Akinwuntan merited his promotion to the rank of Associate Professor in all the three Schools simultaneously. This is a rare feat in academia!

Dr. Akinwuntan is renowned nationally (USA) and internationally for his expertise in driving assessment and rehabilitation after neurologic lesions. Dr. Akinwuntan's unique body of work consistently attracts attention (See PhysioPodcast section for some of the news clips on Dr. Akinwuntan's laboratory) and has seen him in recent years appointed to the prestigious US National Transportation Board's Committee on Simulation and Measurement of  Vehicle and Operator Performance and the US Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration expert panel on strokes and commercial truck driving.

Dr. Akinwuntan is a 1994 graduate of the University of Lagos BSc Physiotherapy program. He bagged his MSc and PhD in Neurological Rehabilitation in 2000 and 2004 respectively from the Department of Rehabilitation Sciences, Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, Belgium. He was appointed as a Senior Lecturer in 2004 at the Department of Physiotherapy, School of Health and Bioscience, University of East London, United Kingdom from where he joined MCG in 2005 as an Assistant Professor. Dr. Akinwuntan is a well published researcher with about fourteen (14) peer-reviewed publications mostly in high impact Journals.

Dr. Akinwuntan's quick rise in the academia has been followed with keen interest by the Nigeria Physiotherapy Network and colleagues from around the world and has become a source of inspiration for the younger generation of Nigerian trained Physiotherapists. We all rejoice with Dr. Akinwuntan and his family for this wonderful achievement.

Congratulations Associate Professor Abiodun Akinwuntan!
