Prof. Chukuka S. Enwemeka, Dean & Professor, College of Health Sciences, University of Wisconsin-MilwaukeeApril 10, 2014: The Nigeria Physiotherapy Network (NPN) is pleased to report the appointment of Professor Chukuka Enwemeka as the next Provost and Senior Vice President of the San Diego State University (SDSU), San Diego, CA, effective July 1, 2014. The NPN join colleagues from around the world in celebrating and congratulating the world reknowned Nigerian educated physiotherapist and expert in the area of photoengineering of tissue repair process with visible and near infrared light and lasers on this 'big' appointment.

Currently, Professor Enwemeka is a Distiguished University Professor, and Dean, College of Health Sciences, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA since August 2009. While at the helms of affairs at Milwaukee, he took his College through significant growth, Community partnership and Engagement; and sound fiscal health.

Prior to his Deanship at UWM, Professor Enwemeka, who is a graduate of the University of Ibadan BSc (Hons) Physiotherapy program, was at the New York Institute of Technology's (NYIT) School of Health Professions, Behavioral and Health Sciences where he served as Dean and Professor from March 1, 2003 to July 31, 2009. Prior to his NYIT position he was Professor and Chairman, Department of Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Sciences at the University of Kansas Medical Center, Kansas City, Kansas from 1993 to 2003.

Professor Enwemeka is an astute researcher, a vastly published author, international Journal Editor-in-Chief, a Physical Therapist, an anatomist, a Consultant, a highly sorted-after international speaker, an academic administrator and leader, a mentor, one of the foremost experts on Laser Therapy and photobiology, an educational consultant and curriculum expert, a sports medicine expert, a visiting professor to various schools around the world, and much more.

According to the President of SDSU, Elliot Hirshman, who appeared extremely pleased that Professor Enwemeka accepted the offer of appointment stated in a press release.... "We are excited to welcome Dr. Enwemeka to the San Diego State University community. His experience in supporting student success, research and creative endeavors and community engagement distinguished him in a strong pool of national candidates.” Professor Enwemeka was appointed into this prestigeous position, chosen from among a pool of highly qualified and outstanding candidates for the same position.

As Provost and Senior Vice President, Professor Enwemeka is the chief academic officer of the university, provides the leadership required to achieve the highest standards in teaching, scholarship, creative activities and service. In this position, Professor Enwemeka will also serve as the second in command in the University, and will therefore act on behalf of the President in his absence. As Provost, he is a key participant in all major university policy, establishing, coordinating and implementing academic goals, educational policy, curriculum planning and development, program review, funding support, resource allocation and personnel actions pertaining to faculty and academic staff.

SDSU founded in 1897 currently has over 35,000 students engaged in 191 degree programs (91 bachelor's degrees, 78 master's degrees and 22 doctorates degree programs). SDSU's students participate in an academic curriculum distinguished by direct contact with faculty and an increasing international emphasis that prepares them for a global future. The university graduates more than 9,000 students each year.

SDSU's annual economic impact to the state of California is $6.5 billion. SDSU has over 270,000-plus alumni, approximately 60 percent live in San Diego. They comprise more than half the region's engineers, teachers, entrepreneurs and the local workforce for a host of other industries.

The Carnegie Foundation designates SDSU a "Research University with high research activity," placing it among the top 200 higher education institutions in the United States conducting research. SDSU's annual research expenditure is $115 million, putting it in the top 5% of academic institutions in the United States. In the 2009–10 academic year, the university reportedly obtained $150 million for research, including $26 million from the National Institutes of Health. The university is projected to be classified as "Doctoral/Research-Extensive in the near future. So far, SDSU faculty and researchers have attracted over $1 billion dollars in external funding to the University.

This is indeed a great news and a monumental achievement that is well deserved by one of the hardest working educator and a dear friend. This major milestone is a thing of joy and pride to all Nigerians at home and in diaspora. Dr. Enwemeka needs no introduction, and he deserves our prayers and best wishes as he steps up to serve at the big league cycle within the ivory tower. Congratulations!
