Nigeria Society of Physiotherapy Inaugurates DPT Action Committee

Professor Arinola Sanya, Deputy Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ibadan to host DPT Action Committee

The National Executive Council of the Nigeria Society of Physiotherapy (NSP) recently constituted a high powered Committee saddled with the sole responsibility of getting DPT curriculum approved by the National University Commission. The DPT Committee is headed by Mrs. Portia Imo, the Vice President of the NSP as Chair, while Dr. Emmanuel B. John will serve as Secretary. Other committee members include:

Professor Arinola Sanya, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration) of the University of Ibadan, has graciously accepted to host the first meeting of the committee on June 3, 2013 at Ibadan.

Terms of reference of the Committee are:

To ensure that the National Universities Commission (NUC) approves the Doctor of Physiotherapy (DPT) programme as a basic degree programme in Nigeria Universities within two (2) years.
To liaise with the Education Committee of NSP to ensure that National Universities Commission (NUC) approves Doctor of Physiotherapy (DPT) as the Minimum Academic Curriculum (B-MAC) for Physiotherapy in Nigeria.
To persuade intending training schools for physiotherapy programmes (both Private and Public) to adopt Doctor of Physiotherapy (DPT) as their B-MAC for Physiotherapy.
To liaise with the Medical Rehabilitation Therapists’ Board of Nigeria (MRTB) in order to ensure that the year 2016 time frame for compliance with commencement of DPT as Benchmark by the Nigerian Universities Commission is adhered to.
To submit report on the Committee’s ongoing plans and actions to the NSP Governing Council on monthly basis.
To liaise with th the NSP to sort out grey area/s (if any) concerning logistics, funding and other relevant areas.
To convince the University of Ilorin, University of Uyo and University of Jos that are about starting Physiotherapy programmes on the reasons why they should start-up with DPT and ensure that they comply with starting with DPT.
To ensure that at least, two Universities in Nigeria commence with either or both Transitional or Entry Level DPT programme befoore expiration of this administration in October, 2014.
The tenure of this committee will terminate at the expiration of this administration.
To serve in advisory capacity and act in all manners of issues regarding DPT programme.
